Spurned Media and some other Social Media Diseases

Pete Blackshaw of Nielsen Online Digital Strategic Services has posted his Social Media and Mobile Glossary of 2010 and it's quite funny. One of my favourites is his first item:

SPURNED MEDIA: Just like it sounds, earned media that goes horribly negative, invades otherwise pristine search results or bleeds into traditional media. Bad customer service is a top driver of "spurned media."

What's earned media, you might want to ask? Let's have a look at Wikipedia:

Earned media (or free media) refers to favorable publicity gained through promotional efforts other than advertising, as opposed to paid media, which refers to publicity gained through advertising. Earned media often refers specifically to publicity gained through editorial influence, whereas social media refers to publicity gained through grassroots action, particularly on the Internet.

Got it? Earned media has the potential to be one of the big buzzwords of 2010. Watch it closely, and don't forget to skim over Pete's other 19 Social Media Diseases, as I would call them.
